Thurston County Traffic: Earthquake Retrofit Project Bolsters I-5 in Olympia

As part of an ongoing effort to minimize damage when a quake strikes, crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will begin a new construction project to help protect Interstate 5 in Olympia.This work will strengthen the I-5/Pacific Avenue overpass. Crews will install steel jackets on four separate bridge columns in order to help withstand quakes.The work will require reduced lanes on Pacific Avenue approaching I-5. One sidewalk will remain open. The work will not affect I-5 or the Pacific Avenue ramps.The project will begin as early as Monday, January 6.
