Wellington boys get first win; girls lose first game

first_img———In the girls game, Wellington improved to 3-0 with another big performance by Ryleigh Buck at the plate, who was 2-of-3 at the plate in game one and getting a home run in game two. Wellington opened the very active offensive day, with Buck and Brooke McCorkle scoring on a Madi Lewellen single. Wellington scored four runs in the fifth when Abby Goodrum singled Baylee DeJarnett home. Abby Goodrum and Madi Adams also scored.Wellington had 11 hits to Mulvane’s 10. The Wildcats committed one error, while Wellington made none.Lewellen picked up her third win of the season from the pitching circle, allowing two runs, 10 hits, and two walks. She had no strike outs.In the second game, Mulvane hitters made Wellington pay dearly in the top of the first, scoring 11 runs against freshman hurler Brooke McCorkle.Wellington, though, would chew down the lead that started in the third when R. Buck hit her third homer of the season to make it 11-4. After a Wildcat run in the bottom of the third, Wellington scored two runs in the top of the fourth. Then Avery Rusk smashed a 3RBI home run in the fifth. A Jacelyn Buck double and a Goodrum triple gave Wellington four more runs in the top of the sixth, and the Lady Dukes were temporarily in front 14-12.However, Mulvane took advantage to two errors to start the sixth and would eventually score six runs to take back the lead and take a four-run lead into the final inning. The Crusaders could score just one run in the top of the seventh, falling to their first defeat of the season.Mulvane would get an eye-popping 21 hits in the game on pitchers McCorkle and Erin Goodrum, while striking out twice. Wellington, which has been so proficient defensively,Wellington had 13 hits in game two including three doubles, one triple, and two home runs. Wellington lost the earlier game, 5-4.On the girls side, Wellington defeated Mulvane 7-2 in game one, but lost the second 18-15.Wellington girls are now 3-1 in the regular season. The boys are 1-3.For the boys, it proved to be an interesting afternoon in which the Crusaders fell behind Mulvane 5-0 before rallying with four runs in the top of the seventh that came up just one run short.That set up game two in which Wellington scored two runs in the top of the first and would never relinquish the lead thereafter.Sophomore Cade Phelps earned the victory pitching all seven innings and allowing just two hits, two walks while striking out four. Wellington’s defense committed just one error, a big improvement from the season opener.On the offensive side, Wellington ripped off eight hits, including RBI singles by Therin Frame and Connor Burnett. Wellington stroked four doubles from Frame, Wesley Gilmore, Ca. Phelps, and Connor Phelps. Gilmore was very proficient getting on base in game two with a .667 OBP.In game one, Wellington gave up five runs in the early stages of the contest, and went into the seventh inning down 5-0.But Wellington’s offense roared to life when Gilmore chucked an RBI single which was followed by a Ca. Phelps RBI.Wellington had nine hits in 29 at bats with Cameron Bartelson, Ca. Phelps, Burnett and Jared Shields each getting doubles. Burnett led the team with a .750 on base percentage.The Crusaders return home Monday to host Collegiate. The 1995 State Championship Baseball team will be honored between games (more on that later).
