Overpowered Warriors run circles around Lakers in lopsided affair

first_img“The first quarter was awful for us,” Lakers coach Luke Walton said. “From that point on, our guys engaged and gave what they had.”Golden State eventually led by as much as 34, with its stars resting for the entire fourth quarter as the Warriors (54-24) cruised closer to locking up the No. 1 seed for the Western Conference playoffs and home-court advantage through the first three rounds.“They look like they’re turning on playoff mode,” said Walton, a former Golden State assistant. “Even watching the last couple games, getting ready for this one, they’re locked in.”It wasn’t until the third quarter when Rajon Rondo (12 points, two assists) became the first Laker to reached double figures in points. No Laker scored more than 17 as the team shot a dismal 35.6 percent from the field. There were only brief notes of joy for the outgunned Lakers, including a second-quarter putback dunk by Alex Caruso (nine points, six assists) that brought the entire bench to its feet. The only Laker who wasn’t wholly pleased by the highlight was JaVale McGee, who teasingly chastised Caruso for putting him on a poster. Lakers practice early hoping to answer all questions Trail Blazers, Grizzlies advance to NBA play-in game; Suns, Spurs see playoff dreams dashed “I’m kind of mad because he dunked on me,” said McGee, who finished with eight points and 13 rebounds against his former squad. “I’m on his team. Like, ‘Dang AC, you’re just gonna dunk on me.’ But I always knew he had hops, so that was nice.”Related Articles AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREUCLA alum Kenny Clark signs four-year contract extension with PackersDurant explained the deficiency the best: “Their whole team is missing.”While Warriors coach Steve Kerr waxed Thursday morning on the potential he once saw in the Lakers when they routed Golden State in Oakland on Christmas, the last meeting between the two this season (completing a 3-1 series for the Warriors) only underlined the gulf between them. LeBron James, who met the Warriors in four straight NBA Finals, watched in a black suit from the bench, alongside Kyle Kuzma and Lonzo Ball. The bludgeoning was accomplished without much production from the “Splash Brothers” duo of Klay Thompson and Curry, who were just a combined 6 for 25 from the field, including a 4-for-16 mark from 3-point range. But DeMarcus Cousins (21 points) proved to be a load in the paint, with the former All-Star and upcoming free agent scoring 21 points and adding 10 rebounds. Durant had a brutally efficient 15 points, eight assists and six rebounds.“They’re playing a lot of young players, inexperienced players,” Durant said. “We took advantage of that.”The Warriors set the tone in the first quarter when they shot 64 percent from the floor and led by 27 points. They made 7 of 12 3-pointers, while the Lakers missed all 10 of their 3-point attempts in the quarter. Their 12 points were a season low for any quarter. The Lakers (35-44), on the other hand, devoted significant minutes to their G League mainstays, including Johnathan Williams and Jemerrio Jones, while playing out the string of a season that now has just three games left.
