Los Angeles Dodgers chase former teammate, hang on for win in Atlanta

first_imgATLANTA — For the Dodgers, the book on Aaron Harang isn’t foreign lit. One chapter was written in Los Angeles in 2012, when Harang made 31 starts in his only season as a Dodger. The first pitch will most likely be a fastball, in the strike zone or at least hittable. It will probably zip in around 89 mph. Should you get on base, try to take advantage of the 6-foot-7 pitcher’s delivery. Harang’s motion out of the stretch has been cited as a primary factor in the ever-increasing length of baseball games. The Dodgers played Harang by the book Thursday, and it worked. They jumped on their former teammate for five runs in 4 1/3 innings in a 6-4 victory over the Braves at Turner Field. The win completed a 6-3 road trip through Anaheim (2-0), Milwaukee (1-2) and Atlanta (3-1). The Dodgers increased their divisional lead over second-place San Francisco from 2 1/2 games to 5 1/2, with the Giants set to play the Philadelphia Phillies later in the day. “I just know I need to bunt,” he said. “It’s part of my game. I needed to do it more.”Dodgers starter Roberto Hernandez (7-8) allowed three hits and one run in six innings. He’s allowed only two runs in two games since he was acquired from Philadelphia to take Josh Beckett’s place in the starting rotation.Though Hernandez struggled with control at times, walking four batters, the Dodgers never trailed. Still, the veteran right-hander needed some help to earn his first win since the trade.Atlanta pushed across three runs in the eighth inning against Dodgers reliever Brian Wilson, turning a 5-1 snoozer into a 5-4 nailbiter. With two runs already in, Mattingly pulled Wilson with a runner on third base and summoned closer Kenley Jansen to record a rare four-out save. Jansen promptly allowed an RBI single to fellow Curacao native Andrelton Simmons, bringing the Braves within 5-4, then fell behind Evan Gattis 3-0. “Today wasn’t an easy day,” Jansen said. “I feel like I didn’t have my stuff.”Jansen came back to strike out Gattis to end the eighth inning. After putting runners on second and third in the ninth inning, Jansen struck out B.J. Upton — an injury replacement for his brother, Justin — to end the game. Jansen picked up his 34th save. The velocity on his cut fastball was down a bit, sitting in the low-90s instead of his usual mid-90s range, but Jansen battled through.“I was crossing my body a little too much, that’s why the velo was down,” he said. The Dodgers host the Brewers for three games beginning Friday. All three opponents on the trip were above .500 at the beginning of each series; the Angels and Brewers were in playoff position.“A lot of times our front office will tell us the next so many games we have are against teams above .500,” manager Don Mattingly said, “but you have to continually walk down the road. I look at it like, they’re the teams that have to deal with us.”The Dodgers found a nearly fail-proof formula for victory Thursday. Their top three hitters — Dee Gordon (3-for-4, walk), Yasiel Puig (3-for-4) and Adrian Gonzalez (3-for-5) — reached base 10 times.Gordon scored a career-high four runs and Gonzalez drove him in three times. Drew Butera chipped in with his third home run of the season, a two-run shot off Harang in the second inning. The Dodgers never trailed.Gordon and Puig both bunted for singles. Harang’s slow delivery gave Gordon a relatively easy path to two stolen bases, giving him a major-league leading 54 for the season. But he was more proud of the walk, his first since July 22, and the bunt.center_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more

President Trump signs Japan trade deal

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest President Trump today signed the U.S.-Japan Trade Agreement, which is an important step forward with U.S. agriculture’s fourth-largest export market. The following may be attributed to American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall:“Today’s signing marks the successful end to more than a year of negotiation between Japan and the United States. This agreement means sharply lower tariffs on our farm and ranch exports with the promise of more to come. And while we aren’t yet finished opening this market, the conclusion of these talks means we can now trade with Japan with the same advantages enjoyed by signers of the CP-TPP trade agreement. That’s great news.“We hope the momentum from this win carries through to the negotiations with China this week and sets the stage for similar bilateral agreements with other countries involved with the CP-TPP. We appreciate this Administration’s efforts to improve trade opportunities for farmers.”BACKGROUNDU.S. negotiators have been working to develop new trade agreements with Japan and other countries in the wake of U.S. withdrawal from the multinational Trans-Pacific Partnership process. The Japan bilateral agreement keeps intact essentially all the trade benefits the United States would have gained in Japan under TPP.The agreement immediately eliminates all tariffs on U.S. exports of sweet corn, almonds, broccoli and prunes, among other things. Other tariffs on products such as ethanol, cheese and whey, fresh cherries and other farm and ranch products will be phased out over a number of years. The U.S. will also benefit from increased export quotas on products such as corn starch, malt, potato starch, fructose and more.AFBF has further analysis concerning the agreement here: Will Rodger Director, Policy Communications Office (202) 406-3642 [email protected] Shearing Director, Internal Communications Office (202) 406-3649 [email protected] Return to Newsroomlast_img read more

I said no, no and no, even if we received a very good offer to sell him, for our structure, no because I saw in him, and I keep seeing in him…(his quality).“If you are asking me about my technical point of view, if I would like to sell him, I will say no.“At the end of last season he came to see me in his office to tell me what he was thinking, about his desire, his future and what he would like to do.“I respect his opinion but I said to him ‘you are in my plans again’.“Then came an offer to the club, and like you know I don’t like to talk about this side of things, but the had just two years left on his contract with us and so then we are talking about many, many things.“It is not just a technical point of view because my opinion about Lookman is the same about as last season. I don’t have doubts. He has all the qualities to have a very good career. The quality is there, he has to change some things, but the quality is there. The most difficult thing, he has – the quality and the talent.“In football you many people with talent who don’t achieve but I believe he will achieve good things in his career.” last_img read more

Govt. ICT Network to Be Managed By Single Entity

first_imgA central entity is to be set up to manage the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) network of the Government. Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, Hon. Phillip Paulwell, said the action, which has been approved by the Cabinet, will enable the merger of two critically important entities  – the Central Information Technology Office (CITO) and Fiscal Services Limited (FSL). Mr. Paulwell was speaking at the launch of the 100th Community Access Point (CAP) at the Social Development Commission’s office on Port Henderson Road in Spanish Town, on February  20. The central office, to be called  eGov Company Limited,  will be housed at the Ministry, and  will be manned by a Chief Information Officer. “We have to get our telephone costs down, eliminate the various platforms that we utilize as a government and have in place one single but capable platform, which will have the requisite broadband capabilities that can be robust and eliminate inefficiencies and ensure that we cut the cost of government,” he said. Mr. Paulwell  pointed to the speed of doing ebusiness with government, and that with the proliferation of smart phones, there should be little need for persons to go in person to government offices to transact business. “That cell phone is for more than just talking; it’s a computer and it can enable the revenue to increase. When you make it easier for people to pay their bills,  they will gladly pay, just to forego the inconvenience of  long lines,” he said.       Applauding members of the community for doing their part in ensuring that the Community Access Point was set up in their area, the Minister called on all to take advantage of  the facility, especially the senior citizens. The setting up of Community Access Points is  to facilitate internet access by residents   across the island.last_img read more
