The Honor 8X makes the budget smartphone premium!

first_imgWhen people talk of budget smartphones, the first thing that often comes to most minds are the corners that must have been cut to “squeeze” the phone into a particular price segment. There are, inevitably, compromises on different fronts – processor, memory, design, cameras…and so many more that people might not even have heard of. In short, if you are considering investing in a budget smartphone, it is very likely that you are considering giving up on a feature or settling for a lower version of it.That changes with the Honor 8X. And we really mean it.One of the most likely areas of compromise for most manufacturers is design – budget devices rarely have premium level designs or materials used. The 8X is, however, a very different kettle of fish. Show it to anyone and it is a fair chance that people will think you spent a bomb on it. And that is because the phone screams “premium” from the moment you see it – yes, we have seen other devices in this price segment sport glass backs, but none of them have the sort of textured finish that makes light refract in different patterns every time it falls on it. It is the sort of finish we have seen before but in devices that cost a lot more – like the Huawei P20 Pro and to an extent, the Moto X4. The presence of dual cameras in a vertical panel on the back that is not as reflective as the rest of the back just adds the right sense of counterbalance to all the glassy glitter next to it. There is no way you can say that this phone starts for as little as Rs 14,999.advertisementThere are no compromises on the hardware front either. The phone has a large 6.5 inch display with full HD+ resolution, putting it right on par with other Android flagships. And it is no ordinary display either – it comes with a new generation of Eye Comfort mode that cuts down on eye fatigue by reducing the blue light emitted by the screen. This is no idle talk – that display is certified TüV Rheinland. And in keeping with the latest trends, it comes with a 19:5.9 aspect ratio, with hardly any bezels, giving it a 91 per cent screen to body ratio (again something that is unheard of at this price point), and with a notch as well, which houses a front facing camera camera and allows you to unlock the phone by just looking at it.But if the display of the Honor 8X sets a new benchmark for budget flagships, its processor takes things to another level. The Honor 8X is only the second device in the country to come with Huawei’s new Kirin 710 octa core processor. And if the glass back and the notched display make the Honor 8X a beauty, the 710 chip, aided with 4 GB and 6 GB of RAM (both variants are available) make it an absolute beast. Remember the Kirin 659 processor which powered devices like the Honor 9 Lite and the Honor P20 Lite and won rave reviews for its performance and power management? The 710 is 75 per cent better! Add support for GPU Turbo and AI, and you have a device that is capable of not just handling routine smartphone tasks (Web browsing, social networking, messaging and the like) but also high end games like PUBG and the Asphalt racing series. Of course, that display will ensure that your eyes do not get tired during the experience and thanks to the superb power management of the chip, the phone will not heat up either, and do not worry about running out of charge either – there is a large 3750 mAh battery that will keep the 8X going comfortably for a day. There are devices with larger batteries out there at this price point but none with a comparable display! But if the display of the Honor 8X sets a new benchmark for budget flagships, its processor takes things to another level. The Honor 8X ,too, scores heavily in the camera section – the 20 megapixel rear camera comes with a large f/1.8 aperture and is aided by a 2 megapixel camera for depth of field shots – add some AI to the mix and you get amazing bokeh backgrounds. The 16 megapixel front facing camera comes with four in one fusion technology and multi frame image processing, enabling you to get terrific selfies. Once again, the performance levels are well beyond anything not just in this price segment, but the ones beyond it. Top this off with dual SIM support, a dedicated microSD card slot (no need to swap a SIM slot for a memory card) and all the connectivity options you would expect in a high-end device and you will realize why the Honor 8X punches well above its price weight. When was the last time we saw a premium design smartphone that could handle pretty much anything (and we mean anything ranging from high end games to photo editing) we threw at it? We remember a few devices but none of them came for as little as Rs 14,999! Which is why we think the Honor 8X redefines the budget smartphone segment – by adding a premium touch to it. You no longer need to spend a bomb or sacrifice a kidney to get a phone that looks stunning and performs brilliantly too. Just get the Honor 8X and you will see eyes pop at its performance and heads turn at its appearance. What’s more the Honor 8X (4+64GB) is available at INR 14,999 with a 10% cashback offer on ICICI/ Citibank cards.last_img read more
